Electrical Inspection and Testing

Fixed Installation Testing

As an experienced ECA and NICEIC approved contractor, SJD provides customers with the high levels of inspection and reporting demanded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Around 1000 electrical accidents are reported to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) each year in the UK. http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/

By law you must take reasonable precautions against the risk of death or personal injury from electricity in work activities. Electricity at Work Regulations (1989)

Periodic inspection checks the installation meets the requirements of BS 7671:2008 edition along with current IEE (Institute of Engineering and Technology) Wiring Regulations and guidance notes.
The IEE wiring regulations state the testing of your electrical installations must be carried out at regular intervals. The testing frequency will depend on the type of installation, its use, how often it is maintained, and other external influences. This testing will be on scale of frequency between after each use to 5 years.

Faulty electrical installations present a risk of death. SJD’s inspections are to reassure you that you have:
  • Adequate earthing and bonding
  • Suitable switchgear and control gear
  • Appropriate wiring systems
  • Residual current devices for electrical equipment used outdoors
  • All necessary notices and identification
  • A clear understanding of any implications around change of use

To arrange your Periodic Inspection, contact SJD today on 01908 632488 or send your enquiry by email.

  •  General condition of the installation
  •   Results of all the electrical tests conducted,
  •   Any lack of earthing or bonding
  •  Identify overloaded circuits or equipment
  • Fire and shock hazards
  •  Defective electrical work
Any problems found will be categorised by their severity, code 1 or code 2 faults require immediate attention. A written proposal will be supplied for any remedial works necessary.

SJD, as a NICEIC accredited contractor, is qualified to carry out all your Periodic Inspections. To arrange the Inspection and Testing of your electrical installations, contact SJD today on 01908 632488 or email your enquiry.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Portable Appliance Testing is the in-service inspection and testing of electrical items to ensure that they are fit for use. This is undertaken by an experienced electrician qualified to operate the multi-function test equipment, interpret the results and trained to spot flaws, defects or damaged cables.

The purpose of periodic inspection and testing is to provide so far as is reasonably practicable the safety of persons against the effects of electric shock and burns, protection against damage to property by fire and heat arising from an installation defect and confirmation that the installation is not damaged or deteriorated so as to impair safety.

Repeated use inevitably causes wear and tear to portable electrical appliances which can lead to damaged leads, plugs, loose connection or problems with the appliance itself. If undetected and unresolved, this may in turn result in an electric shock or fire.

Employers, institutions and landlords have a statutory requirement to have all your electrical appliances tested if:
  • The appliances are used by your employees
  • The public have access to and use the appliances (e.g. schools or hotels)
  • If you lend or hire the appliances
  • If the appliances are repaired or serviced

SJD can organise portable appliance testing at times to suit you, including out-of-hours working. Failed items are clearly marked and identified to you at the time of failure. A schedule of appliances is supplied in your preferred format (electronic or paper based),

There is no fixed frequency for PAT testing, it depends on the type if appliance and type of use. SJD will advise you on all aspects of your PAT testing, including the test frequency. For more information, contact SJD today on 01908 632488 or click here to send your enquiry by email.
