Choosing the right electrician?

The top priority for the domestic building must be the safety and security of its occupants and contents.

How safe is your wiring your home?

In less time than you may think, the electrics in your home can become damaged or worn through general wear and tear. It’s important to get them inspected and tested to check they’re still safe to use.

  • Do you know where your fuse box is?
  • Do you know how to isolate it?
  • Do you have a consumer unit with a circuit chart, so that you know which switch to turn off in relation to which part of the electrics?
  • Does your consumer unit meet the latest standards of RCD protection to minimise the risk of shock?
  • Does your equipotential bonding / earth bonding meet current regulations? Equipotential bonding is designed for the automatic disconnection of supplies when there are fault conditions to prevent electric shock?
  • What is the overall condition of the wiring in your property?

The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) is an independent charity committed to reducing deaths and injuries through electrical accidents at home and at work. Their website provides full advice on selecting a competent, qualified contractor to work in your home.

Part P

An electrical safety law, Part P of the Building Regulations, was introduced by the Government on 1st January 2005 with the aim of further enhancing the protection of homeowners and reducing the risk of electric shock when using electricity. Download this Factsheet produced by the NICEIC for full details.

In line with current legislation, SJD is a registered, approved domestic installer with the NICEIC. You can be assured that all electrical works carried out by us are guaranteed and certificated in accordance with BS 7671:2008 (17th edition wring regulations effective July 1st 2008) and notified to Building Control in line with Part P of the Building Regulations.
